Sports are often defined by those who participate in them as physical, contact, competition or exercise. Sports are categorized as either indoor or outdoor activities. The activities included in sports can be competitive or non-competitive.
Sport is often defined as a physical activity that entails a level of physical fitness, for example basketball or netball. Many forms of racing and some games designed to simulate war are also classed as sports. An athlete in a sport can be described as a participant. When an athlete undertakes a task to obtain a reward, the reward may be personal, professional, financial or emotional. In order to attain personal rewards through sports, an individual must possess the ability to apply the knowledge learned through training and experience, as well as a reasonable degree of physical stamina.
The term sport can also be applied to any physical activity that leads to a reward in terms of personal achievement, or a competition in which the achievement is based on a contest to reach a standard of physical fitness. Sports are often associated with competition, and the word game can be used to describe sports activities, athletic events, competitions or contests. For instance, American football, or American football as it is commonly called, is not really a sport, but rather a team-based competitive activity.

As defined above, sports refer to either a physical or non-physical competition or contest. Most people would think that there is no difference between sports and games, and that they are all alike. But the truth is that while most sports and games require physical strength, some require mental strength. People who play sports and games need to have the ability to concentrate and focus on their activity, but at the same time need to be agile enough to react to emerging situations. The ability to remain calm and collected in stressful situations, and to know how to manage anger, frustration and other negative emotions are important prerequisites for sports and games.
Sport involves both the mind and body, and the two are tightly connected. Just as a person needs good health and fitness to perform optimally in a sports competition or game, the mind needs a healthy diet, regular exercise, and the social support of others to be able to stay focused and alert. Sport activities are a positive force for encouraging both personal growth and a healthy lifestyle.

Not all sports can be classified as a sport, and not all sports can be played competitively. Competitive athletics like swimming, cycling, rowing and running are considered as recreational sports. They are therefore different from sports that involve physical contact, like contact sports such as wrestling and boxing, and involve the use of the head, feet and hands. Physical contact sports are organised participation in physical activity of a competitive nature. The most obvious example of this type of sport is a boxing match, where two competitors attempt to knock each other out of the boxing ring with the use of their respective hands and feet. This sport is widely regarded as one of the toughest in the world.
